Shakespeare: The Rom-Com King

Happy Bardacious Birthday!

Fireworks heartsToday is Shakespeare’s 449th birthday! If you missed last year’s Bardacious Birthday post on YA-spin adaptations of his plays, you can read it here.

This year I wanted to do a celebratory shout out for Shakespeare’s happy plays … the romantic comedies. Rom-coms, in the current vernacular

Shakespeare’s comedies are my favorites, shallow (but happily so) as that may be. Though I’m not alone, if you consider how long they’ve been hits … 400+ years!

When I was researching my post, Rom-Coms ~The Lighter Side of Love, I came across an article that claimed “Shakespeare was the first [author] to make rom-coms popular.” I don’t know if that’s true. But it sounds true, so I’m going to roll with it seeing how it’s his birthday and all.

The following is a list of Shakespeare’s comedies. I’m sure you’ve heard of at least a few, and maybe even seen a movie of one or two:

  • All’s Well That Ends WellMidsummer's Nigh Dream movie poster
  • As You Like It
  • The Comedy of Errors
  • Love’s Labour’s Lost
  • Measure for Measure
  • The Merchant of Venice
  • The Merry Wives of Windsor
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Much Ado About Nothing
  • Pericles, Prince of Tyre
  • The Taming of the Shrew
  • The Tempest
  • Twelfth Night
  • The Two Gentlemen of Verona
  • The Two Noble Kinsmen
  • The Winter’s Tale

Forsooth! Formulaic or Fantastic?

I may be a huge Shakespeare comedy fan, but there are some who insist his comedies are formulaic. That he even “borrowed” the formula and used it over, and over, and over again. Whatever.

I love Shakespeare’s comedies for what they are — witty and fun. In their time, they entertained nobility and the uneducated common folk. In the same theater. No small feat, breaching a target audience gap that wide.

How now! A 16 Play Mashup!

Shakespeare was a man of his time, and if he were alive today he’d embrace the humor and whimsy of our modern world. Enter the mashup. It’s popular in today’s music, why not plays? The following mashup of Shakespeare’s 16 comedies was contrived by none other than the raucously irreverent Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC), creators of the Othello Rap

The Comedy of Two Well Measured Gentlemen Lost in the Merry Wives of Venice on a Midsummer’s-Twelfth Night in Winter; or Cymbeline Taming Pericles the Merchant in the Tempest of Love as Much as you like it for Nothing; or Four Weddings and a Transvestite

Trust me. You don’t want to miss the performance of the comedy mashup…

Teen Literature Day: April 18, 2013

Operation Teen Book Drop (OTBD) has been a Teen Literature Day event since 2009. It was initiated by readergirlz, a literacy and social media project for teens that has been awarded the National Book Award for Innovations in Reading.

Here’s what Publishers Weekly says about OTBD…

… followers of the Readergirlz blog and others celebrate [Teen Literature Day] by taking part in “Rock the Drop,” the guerilla-style book distribution scheme in which YA fans leave copies of favorite books in public spaces for readers to pick up and enjoy.

How awesome is that?

I’m embarrassed to admit that OTBD only came onto my radar last year, when I noticed #rockthedrop on the Twitter feed. This year, I FINALLY got a clue and joined the fun!

Getting Ready to Rock the Drop!

Rock the Drop book plateThere was a little prep work to get ready for “the drop”. This was to make sure the teens who find the books know they are a “gift” and theirs to keep.

First I printed out the  book-plate designed by the talented Lindsay Frantz! Then, I fixed a book-plate inside each book.

Next, to make it super obvious (at first glance) that the books are *supposed to* be taken, I created bookmark-style signs that I stuck in each book. Here’s my OTBD stash and prep work:

Rock the Drop Books and Preperation

Next year I’ll be better prepared! Just days before finding out about OTB, I donated several bags of YA books to the public library. Next year they’ll all go to Operation Teen Book Drop. And I’ll custom design snazzy “TAKE ME ~ YOU WIN!” bookmark thingies too.

Note: Anything worth doing well is worth overdoing!

Rocking the Drop!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Leave books in public places where teens are most likely to find them.
  2. Take photos. I used Instagram on my iPhone.
  3. Tweet the photos, along with the location, using the hashtag #rockthedrop.
  4. Follow @readergirlz on Twitter and watch the #rockthedrop feed. Fun!

17 YA Authors + Disneyland = The YAppiest Day on Earth!

YAppiest Day on Earth icon

If you couldn’t make The YAppiest Day on Earth, you can still be one of the YAppiest crowd by participating in this giveaway. The YAppiness keeps rolling with FREE giveaways of epic reads by each of the 17 authors. You can win this book by following the Sweet Rules below.

This is the first YAppiest Giveaway! For a list of the upcoming giveaways, go here.

“Because It Is My Blood” (Birthright Book 2)

YDOEG_cover1In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal. Anya Balachine is the teenage daughter of the most notorious (so notorious he’s dead) chocolate mafia lord. Family chocolateering aside, life was pretty normal, until she was falsely implicated in a poisoning caused by her family’s bootleg chocolate. Circumstances spiraled out of control, ending in a shooting that landed Anya in prison.

BECAUSE IT IS MY BLOOD begins with Anya’s release from Liberty Children’s Facility.  If prison’s taught her anything, it’s that she wants to be on the other side of the bars. Always. Anya Balanchine is determined to go back to her normal life, where all she had to worry about was falling in love with the wrong boy, and graduate from high school with the rest of her class.

Unfortunately, no school will to take her now that she has a gun possession and shooting charge on her record. Even more disconcerting, the people who were so important to her moved on while she was away. Her genius sister Natty skipped two grades and no longer needs her mothering supervision. Her best friend Scarlet is dating her old ex, and her used-to-be boyfriend Win is seeing someone else.

Things pretty much suck. And then they get worse when she’s driven back into the criminal world she was determined to escape. Her only hope is to leave the city and people she loves, and across the ocean to the birthplace of chocolate.

Dark and Rich, with Mysterious Undertones

Nothing is sugar-coated in Anya’s life, but her story is rich in mettle and meaning. It’s a rollercoaster ride of danger an intrigue, with friends that are enemies and enemies that  turn out to be friends.

Caught in her family’s mafia past, Anya makes a daring escape to Mexico where chocolate is still legal. On the cocoa farm where she’s taken in by plantation family, Anya learns the real truth and mystery of chocolate.  Anya discovers she can’t run from your problems, when her past seeks her out in Mexico and endangering the family who have treated her like their own.

Anya returns to New York ti deal with her mafia relations, and face the lengths they’ll go to take over the failing Balanchine chocolate empire. Her personal relationships are no less messy, and honesty and forgiveness don’t come easy for Anya. But Anya has to dig deep and realize her  convictions, and devise a plan to restore her family’s company and bring it back to the honest side of the law. The decision is the right one for Anya, but it could cost her the boy she loves and bring retaliation from family members set on keeping Balachine chocolate illegal.

Embossed cover designI love this book for its rich world-building, complex characters, mafia intrigue that kept me guessing, but most of all for its heart.

And as if that wasn’t enough… the cover underneath the dust jacket is embossed to resemble a bar of Balanchine bittersweet chocolate!

I’m so looking forward to Gabrielle Zevin’s Birthright Book 3!

Doubly Sweet Giveaway!

BECAUSE IT IS MY BLOOD is the sequel to the first Birtright book, ALL THESE THINGS I’VE DONE. And because I LOVE these books so much, and want you to enjoy the full awesomeness of Anya Balanchine’s story, one lucky person will win BOTH Birthright books!

Discovering Manhattan: A Pictorial Tour of My Protagonist’s World

Manual typewriterResearch is one of my favorite parts of the writing process. It’s an intriguing exploration into worlds-yet-unknown, where the story comes to life and becomes real.  I had a few final details to research in Manhattan for my project, which was major reason behind my coast hopping to New York City in early February. (pic by moi)

Yes, I went to NYC to attend the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Winter Conference (NY13SCBWI), which was wonderful in all the ways such conferences are. But I had another agenda too… Research.

The Character of Central Park Landmarks…

My project takes place in and around New York City’s Central Park, and a couple of the landmarks played such an important role in the story that they became characters themselves…

Cleopatra’s Needle: The oldest man-made object in Central Park

Her Way is the Subway…

Most New Yorkers use public transportation to get around town. My protagonist is no different. She uses the subway, so I followed in her footsteps. There beneath the streets of Manhattan, I discovered the amazing signage from a bygone era (pic by moi)…

86th Street Subway Tile marker

Historical Ruins in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is important to my protagonist and her story as well, so I had to experience the collection first-hand. What impressed me most (and I was an art major, so I’ve been to lots of art museums) is that The Met houses reconstructed historical rooms and ruins … not just the typical types of art (pics by moi)…

Serendipity 3: Frozen Hot Chocolate

Like many teenagers, my protagonist loves coffee and chocolate. And what better place to meet her friends than Serendipity 3? While conspiring, they consume coffee drinks and Serendipity’s world-famous Frozen Hot Chocolate. Which is to die for, by the way (pics by moi)…

Serendipity 3, NYC

The Plaza … Of course!

My next stop was The Plaza Hotel, where my protagonist’s grandfather owns a private suite. Yes, on the top floor … one with a turret. Eloise does not have anything to do with my story, but I had to take this picture because nothing says “The Plaza” like Eloise. The photo on the right is of The Palm Court restaurant (pics by moi)…

Hiding Out at The Waldorf Astoria…

Last but not least was a visit to The Waldorf  Astoria, where my protagonist is forced to go into hiding. Yeah, I know. Tough break sistah. You might wish you had her financial backing … but you don’t want the problems tied to it. Trust me.

The lobby of The Waldorf Astoria is an architectural marvel…

How do you discover your character’s world?

Ellen Gregory’s recent post on her “research” experience with beads and braids, inspired me to share this pictorial research tour.

What type of research helps you discover your character’s world?

17 YA Authors + Disneyland = Crazy Awesome Fun!

YAppiest Authors

3.30.13 Disneyland, Anaheim, CA

From left to right, back row first: Jennifer Bosworth, Chris Howard, Me, Lish McBride, Sean Beaudoin, Kevin Emerson, Elise Allen, Robin Mellom, Gretchn McNeil, Martha Brockenbrough, Rachel Cohn, Carrie Lawler Arcos, Gabrielle Zevin, Cecil Castellucci, Shannon Messenger, Cat Patrick, and Jessica Brody. ~oOo~

The awesome Cat Patrick dreamed up this epic event: Seventeen young adult authors + bloggers, librarians, and book enthusiasts like me converged on Disneyland at 8:00 AM Saturday, March 30th.

Chris Howard, Indiana Jones Ride

The fun started as soon as we stepped through the gates of the Magic Kingdom… We rode rides, screamed, got drenched and/or stuck on rides (thanks to Tigger spilling honey on the Pooh ride), pretended we were pirates, ate chocolate, tacos, and more chocolate (though no chocolate tacos that I’m aware of). It was the best day ever! All shared with a group of amazing people who love books. (Chris Howard pic by Kasie West)

Anyone too far away to participate could (and maybe still can) order autographed books by these amazing authors through the  Mysterious Galaxy’s website.

Not to make you jealous if you didn’t know about this fab event (or couldn’t make it), but here’s a glimpse of what you missed…

Screaming, Reading, Silly Hats, and Prizes!

There was Tower of Terror screaming (pic by Jennifer Bosworth)…

Some were too busy reading to scream (pic by Kevin Emerson) … while others couldn’t help themselves (pic by moi) …

Silly hats happen to just about everyone at Disneyland, as Kevin Emerson discovered (Rapunzel pic by Cat Patrick)… Then there were the lucky dogs who won prizes (Sean Beaudoin pic by Cecil Castellucci)…

And a Book Signing, Chainmail and All!

Anyone who couldn’t make it to the park could join the YAppy crowd at the 5:30 book signing at the Anabella Hotel, across the street from Disneyland. Mysterious Galaxy provided the authors’ books for sale. Autograph slinging ensued, followed by more food and drinks … and wouldn’t you know … chainmail! Compliments of a YAppiest fan who stopped by after attending WonderCon…

“CATcerto” is Pawsitively Meow-velous!

Tags

No, this is not a joke!

CATcerto” is a serious orchestral piece by Lithuanian composer Mindaugas Piečaitis, in collaboration with Nora, the Piano Cat. I am not even kidding.

Mr. Piečaitis was inspired to write a concerto after seeing one of Nora’s YouTube videos. For the performance of CATcerto, Mr. Piečaitis conducts with Nora, the guest soloist, appearing in a pre-recorded video projected onto a large screen behind the orchestra.

CATcherto Live Performance

The world premiere of CATcerto was performed by Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra in the Klaipėda Concert Hall in Klaipėda (Lithuania) on 5th June, 2009. Since then, CATcerto has been performed in cities and countries around the globe.

Nora, the Piano Cat

Nora the Piano CatYou might have seen one of Nora, the Piano Cat’s YouTube videos all ready. Or maybe caught one her performances on Wild Animals or The Today Show.

ABC News, with Matt O’Donnell, brought Nora into the spotlight back in 2007. Back then, her YouTube video had 600,000 views. Now her videos have over 25,000,000 views and the numbers keep on climbing.

In 2010, CATcerto was in the Guinness World Records as the first concerto ever written for a cat. Eat your heart out Garfield!

Still don’t believe me? Watch the following video of the entire performance of CATcerto.

Cat + Piano + Composer = CATcerto

The Science of Fun

The Fun Theory

Yes, I’m happy to say there is such a thing. The Fun Theory follows the simple premise that…

Making something fun is the easiest way to change people’s behavior for the better.

In Odenplan, Stockholm, The Fun Theory was applied to stairs in order to entice people to exercise, rather than riding the escalator.

Piano StairsThe exercise we get by taking the stairs (instead of the escalator) makes us feel better. But how many people follow that common-sense rule? The short answer: Not many.

Here, The Fun Theory challenge was to get more people to take the stairs by making it “fun”.

  • The tactic: Turn a regular staircase into a Piano Staircase. Just like in the movie Big, except the piano keys are real stairs.
  • The results: 66% more people took the Piano Stairs (rather than the escalator).

The Fun Theory works!

The following video demonstrates The Fun Theory in action. See how a little ingenuity creates “fun” that improves lives.

What chore would you want to make FUN?

Who knows? You could become the next Fun Theory winner!

If you do a search on Fun Theory, you’ll find other amazing examples of the Science of Fun at work!

Fireflies and Shooting Stars ~ a Chapter Book that Shines GIVEAWAY!!!

Tags

, , , , ,

I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Raarup at the 2013 SCBWI Winter Conference in New York. I don’t usually read chapter books, but I was so impressed with the story, illustrations, and original songs (Broadway caliber!) for Fireflies and Shooting Stars  that I had to blog about it … and offer a FREE GIVEAWAY!

Cover for Fireflies and Shooting StarsFireflies and Shooting Stars “The Tale of Enzo”

by Ed Raarup,  Illustrated by Lindsay D. Nery

Fireflies and Shooting Stars is a heart-warming tale about Enzo, a little firefly who was born without a tail light.

It’s obvious Enzo is different from the other young fireflies, and the challenges this brings sets Enzo on a fantastic journey to find his own light. Enzo’s determination takes him on a magical flight of hope, understanding, and self-discovery, as he realizes the power of his uniqueness and the importance of accepting the differences in others as well as himself.

A Heart-Warming Story with Universal Appeal

What hooked me on this story was its universal appeal and positive message. I immediately empathized with Enzo, a firefly born without a tail light, and cheered for him on his journey to become whole. Though the true power of the story came when Enzo realized he doesn’t need a tail light, that his greatest gift shines from within. We are all “different” in one way or another, and the theme of self-acceptance and embracing the differences in others are important lessons to learn … at any age.

The luminous illustrations Lindsay D. Nery created  for Fireflies and Shooting Stars  (full-color throughout) bring Enzo and his family and friends to life, while drawing us into their magical world of fun and adventure. Their visual appeal add depth to the story, and shine in their own right.

Plus a Broadway Caliber Musical!

It’s rare that you find a strong story with musical accompaniment to match. Music plays an important role in (the story) Fireflies and Shooting Stars, and the accompanying CD is nothing short of amazing. The twelve original Broadway caliber songs are performed by professional talent. Seriously, folks. This musical score is on par with “Annie”, maybe better.

A Brilliant GivEaway!

For a chance to win a  copy of the awesome Fireflies and Shooting Stars, here’s what you do:

  1. Leave a  comment on this blog by midnight Sunday, March 3rd (1 entry).
  2. Tweet this blog post (1 entry).
  3. Share this blog post on Facebook (1 entry).
  4. In your blog comment, mention your tweets and shares (if any).

On March 4th, I’ll tally your score and enter your name once for each entry, then draw a winner at random and announce the winner on this blog Wednesday, March 6th.

NOTE: Sorry, but this contest is only for residents in the continental United States, due to shipping costs.
