It’s July … and in many places it’s HOT!
Wouldn’t it be great to get a reprieve from the heat with a walk in the rain … whenever you wanted … and not get wet?
You can…
In ย Barbican, London there’s a place where the weather is inside. A room where it’s perpetually raining, where you can always experience the cool and calming effects of rain.ย Without getting wet.
Walk in the Rain without Getting Wet
How’d they do that?
Short answer:
The Rain Room is a 100 square meter area that uses 3D tracking cameras to map your presence, allowing you to walk and move through the continuously falling water without getting wet.
Longer (and more interesting) answer:
VERY Cool! What scientist/engineers won’t think up!
I know. Amazing, huh? Though I didn’t quite get how they came to this idea from trying to develop a new method of printing (ink on paper). Probably because I’m not an engineer. ๐
Wow! That’s awesome. I’d love to go there and see it in person. The fact that I’d have to travel to London to do it is an added draw.
๐
I think it would be very calming to stand in the middle of that room with rain coming down all around. London is always a good idea. ๐
So cool! Just one more reason I need to return to London. ๐
Yes, indeed. London is *always* a good idea. Especially if your trip is timed for an opening event for a certain classy British actor. ๐
Very cool — but if your aim is actually to get cool, doesn’t this kind of defeat the purpose? (heh) Would love to check it out, though.
The process of evaporation is what’s cooling, so you don’t have to physically get wet to feel the effects. Before modern air conditioning, they used *swamp coolers* in the desert regions of California. Which were basically tall towers with water dripped down, then air was blown across circulating into the house. ๐
Actually evaporative cooling systems are used widely here, since our heat is very dry. ๐
Now that’s a cool system! Beats Wellington NZ any day – we’ve just had 3 days of freezing winter rain and gales…:-)
When I posted this, I wasn’t forgetting that the Southern Hemisphere is currently experiencing *winter* weather. I bet they could moderate the temperature in the Rain Room, so those from colder climates could experience a warm tropical rain. ๐
